CTE College Credit

Parents: College transcripts are secured records that require unique identifiers for students to be able to request copies of them, sometimes many years after they have earned the credits.

While it is not required for students to provide their social security numbers when they register for Tech Prep credits, it does help keep their college transcript accurately tied to their profiles rather than to another student's profile who happens to have the same name.

Making sure that students know their full mailing address, permanent phone number, and that they have a unique email address can provide similar unique identifiers.

How ‘Tech Prep’ Equals College Credits

For students who earn a "B" or better in their CTE courses, earning college credits in ‘Tech Prep’ aligned courses is free. Tech Prep courses represent powerful, ongoing and collaborative efforts of college and high school Career and Technical Education (CTE) teachers to formally align – or articulate – college courses with high school CTE courses.

Underpinning the huge success of Tech Prep is the practice of teachers from high schools and colleges working together to ensure the high school classes match the course competencies of the college-level courses. All of the Tech Prep courses offered at AHS connect with a college certificate or degree, usually through Skagit Valley College.

Tech Prep is a dual credit program*, which means students earn high school AND college credit for completing the same course. The courses are typically taught at the high school, but they are considered part of a college degree or certificate program. Dual credit helps students:

* How the Dual Credit Works

Students enroll in Tech Prep articulated CTE courses at Anacortes High School. Some time during the first few weeks of the semester, their CTE teacher helps students to enroll in the Tech Prep articulated courses online during class. Tech Prep enrollment takes about ten minutes.

When students complete the high school course, the high school transcribes the credit for those who earned a passing grade in the course. The teacher then reports the Tech Prep grades for those students who successfully met the requirements of the course and earned a "B" or better grade. Colleges transcribe Tech Prep credits during the summer after the academic year in which students successfully complete their courses.
